U.S. troops withdrawal from Afghanistan to depend on situation in this country - Assistant Secretary of State
2 September 2010, 10:26

CA-NEWS (TJ) - Withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan will depend on the situation in this country and success of coalition forces, said the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Central and South Asia Robert Blake at a press conference in Dushanbe on Wednesday evening.

He said the United States increased its forces by three times to 100 thousand troops. Referring to the statement by Barack Obama, the assistant secretary of state said that a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan will begin in the summer of 2011.

"The scale and pace of withdrawal will depend on the situation in this country and the progress of coalition forces, as well as the willingness of law enforcement agencies in Afghanistan to bring the situation under control. We can not tell the time needed for withdrawal now," said Blake.

He noted that law enforcement agencies of Afghanistan are ready to bring the situation under control in certain areas of the country.

Blake added that it is expected to revise U.S. policy in Afghanistan in December.
